As property agents, most of what people see are the happy moments.
“Just Sold.”
“Just Rented.”
Happy clients collecting their keys.
But behind every successful transaction are many stories that never make it onto social media.
Recently, I was entrusted by a landlord to market a rental property. After our first meeting, I understood what was important to the landlord and began preparing the unit for marketing. I made trips to the property to take photos, create marketing materials, arrange viewings and follow up with prospective tenants.
The response was encouraging.
There were plenty of enquiries, and before long, I had interested tenants who were ready to make an offer. Naturally, I felt optimistic that we were getting close to securing the rental.
However, things didn’t turn out the way I expected.
After speaking with the landlord again, she shared that she had decided to proceed with another group of tenants. The decision wasn’t based on the rental amount or who made an offer first. Instead, it came down to finding tenants whose lifestyle and household preferences were a better fit for what she was looking for.
Did I feel disappointed?
Of course.
Like any property agent, I had invested time and effort into marketing the home, arranging viewings and following up with enquiries. I genuinely hoped that one of the tenants I introduced would be the successful applicant.
But this experience reminded me of something important.
As agents, our job isn’t to convince landlords to choose the tenants we introduce.
Our responsibility is to understand our clients’ needs, present suitable options, offer honest advice and respect their final decision.
Every landlord has different priorities.
Some focus on achieving the highest rent.
Some value a quick handover.
Others place greater importance on finding tenants whose lifestyle is a good match for their home.
There isn’t a right or wrong answer. Every landlord has the right to decide what matters most to them.
While I didn’t secure this particular rental, I walked away with something equally valuable, a reminder that real estate is a business built on trust, not just transactions.
Not every viewing ends with a signed tenancy agreement.
Not every negotiation leads to a completed deal.
And that’s okay.
Tomorrow brings another enquiry, another viewing and another opportunity to help someone with their property journey.
Sometimes, the lessons from the deals we don’t close become the ones that help us grow the most.
